Do's & Don'ts of Secondhand Gift Giving

When it comes to gift-giving, many people believe that buying brand new gifts is the best way to show someone you care. However, secondhand gifting is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. Gifting pre-loved items is a thoughtful and heartfelt way to show someone you care, while also being eco-friendly and sustainable.

🎁 DO: Be honest
First and foremost, it's important to be honest about where you got the piece. There's nothing wrong with giving a secondhand item as a gift, but it's important to be transparent about its origins.

DON'T: Regift junk
Shopping secondhand is about being thoughtful and putting time into the person you're buying for. Don't wrap up something you have around the house just because you don't use or like it anymore. No one else needs your junk.

🎁 DO: Share why you picked out the piece
When giving a secondhand gift, it's important to share why you picked out the gift. Maybe it's a vintage item that reminded you of the recipient, or maybe it's a piece that you know they've been searching for. Whatever the reason, sharing your thought process can make the gift feel more special and personal.

DON'T: Buy fake designer in hopes of impressing
Not only is it unethical, but it can also be illegal. Instead, focus on finding unique pieces that are authentic and have their own story.

🎁 DO: Repurpose
If you're giving a secondhand item, consider repurposing it in a creative way. Maybe you can turn an old sweater into a cozy blanket, or use vintage fabric to make a one-of-a-kind tote bag. By repurposing items, you can give them new life and help reduce waste.

DON'T: Buy fast & cheap fashion.
It's a good idea to skip fast fashion & cheaply made items. Wish.com, SHEIN, Temu and similar online stores are cheap because their quality is so terrible.  The fashion industry is one of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution, and supporting fast fashion only perpetuates this problem. Instead, focus on sustainable and eco-friendly items that are better for the planet (which includes secondhand items!)

🎁 DO: Create a beautiful presentation
Just because it's secondhand doesn't mean it can't be given in a thoughtful and elegant way. Consider wrapping it in recycled paper or tying it with a ribbon made from repurposed fabric. By putting in a little extra effort, you can make your secondhand gift feel just as special as a brand new one.
